The Maldives, or Maldive Islands, officially Republic of Maldives, has 26 naturally occurring atolls which are divided into 20 administrative ones. The main atolls are North and South Male and Addu.
Situated in the Indian ocean, southwest of India, over 80 percent of the land area is less than one metre above sea level. It is the lowest country on the planet, and also the country with the lowest highest point in the world, at 2.3 metres (7 ft 7 in). The Maldives is the smallest Asian country in both population and area.
The climate is hot, humid and monsoonal. There is little cultivation and almost all food is imported. Tourism has expanded rapidly and is the most important sector of the economy.
