The Togolese Republic, also known as Togo, is a long narrow country in west Africa with a short coastline on the Gulf of Guinea. It is bordered by Ghana to the west, Benin to the east and Burkina Faso to the north. It extends south to the Gulf of Guinea, on which the capital Lomé is located.
The interior consist of plateaus rising to mountainous areas. The climate is tropical, and is drier inland. Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy. Phosphate mining and food processing are the main industries. Cotton, phosphates, coffee and cocoa are the main exports. Lome is an entrepôt trade centre a trading post where merchandise can be imported and exported without paying import duties.
