What Are Varicose Veins?
Answer:
Varicose veins can occur anywhere in the body, but are most commonly seen running along the inside of the legs and calves. They are caused by valves inside the veins, which start leaking due to excessive vertical pressure. The vein tries to ‘make more space’ by getting bigger or bulging, and twisting instead of running in a straight line.
Family history, standing occupations or pastimes, pregnancy, crossing your legs and general poor health all add to the incidence of what is a very common problem. Symptoms may include pain, swelling and skin ulcers.
