What Causes a Sore Throat?

Sore throats are mostly caused by a viral infection but can also be trigged by breathing in smoke, and allergy or a postnasal drip, or a scrape from a bone fragment. Certain medical treatments can cause a sore throat, such as a tonsillectomy or cancer treatment with chemotherapy or radiation.
Symptoms of a sore throat include pain with swallowing and you may also experience a hoarse voice, mild cough, fever, headache and tiredness.
