What Is Obesity?

Answer:

From left to right: The "healthy" man has
a 33 inch (84 cm) waist, the "overweight"
man a 45 inch (114 cm) waist, and the
"obese" man a 60 inch (152cm) waist.

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems.

Body mass index (BMI), a measurement which compares weight and height, defines people as overweight (pre-obese) when their BMI is between 25 kg/m2 and 30 kg/m2, and obese when it is greater than 30 kg/m2.

Obesity and overweight have in the last decade become a global problem — according to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2005 approximately 1.6 billion adults over the of age 15+ were overweight, at least 400 million adults were obese and at least 20 million children under the age of 5 years were overweight.
